WTH is Pre-Fall?!?!

Fashion trends worn during pre-fall

I have something I need to get out. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out if this is actually something new or if I’ve been hanging out under a fashion rock the past few years. I need to talk about “pre-fall.” And I need to talk about it before September 23rd, which according to my Alexa, is the first official full day of fall in the U.S.

First question- Is it new? Sometime in August of this year, I suddenly started getting so many emails from all my favorite stores and brands encouraging me to check out their “pre-fall” edits. I mean, ok, I’m interested. I’ve never met a fashion edit email I didn’t want to open. But what??? Has this always been a thing or did someone recently come up with it, make a Tik-Tok, and all the brands decided (all at the same time) that this rando was onto something?

Second question- Where has it been my whole life? I may be confused about its origin, but I AM IN! The seasons between seasons are always so hard to dress for! Especially when you live somewhere that isn’t known for distinct weather patterns. Like, it’s not blazing hot summer, but I’m not quite ready to drink a PSL. How do you dress for that? Well, worry no more, friends, our unknown hero came up with “pre-fall.”

Last question- What does it look like? Think long sleeve dresses in thin fabrics paired with booties or closed-toe clogs. We can start wearing fall colors and patterns (like plaid- yes, please!), but in more summery styles. Get out that espresso brown, hunter green, and navy blue. But pair it all with sandals or short sleeves. Have a favorite lightweight jacket that you always wait too long to wear? Wear it now! Just throw it on with a summer dress and there you go…you’re rocking pre-fall!

Here’s Some of my Favorite Pre-Fall Looks

This Tuckernuck Bow Dress is on my wishlist. A hunter green shift dress with a fun ribbon bow twist? Yes, please.

The vest trend is taking me back. I’m still regretting getting rid of my favorite Gap sweater vest from circa 1998. This Shopbop Vest would be so cute with the Denim Skirt and the Sam Edelman Boots. Perfect pre-fall outfit. Insert heart eyes emoji here.

I JUST bought this Anthropologie Plaid Dress, and let me tell you, it is the sweetest dress with a flattering cut and adorable flutter sleeves.

This time of year, I rarely leave the house without a sweater in hand. Just. In. Case. And I can’t think of anyone who does oversized cardigans better than Free people. Check out all the fun colors this Free People Cardigan comes in. I love the color I linked, but I’m a sucker for ivory too.

The other thing I NEVER leave the house without is my BruMate Tumbler. I have the blue agave color, but this is a fun color combo for fall. I have tried so many brands of tumblers, and this is, by far, my favorite.

Anthropologie never disappoints in the accessory category. This Anthropologie Bag and Anthropologie Stone Necklace are the perfect colors to get the season started. I have the necklace in summery colors, but now I’m thinking I need this color combo too.

You know that lightweight jacket I mentioned? This J. Crew Cropped Barn Jacket is perfect for this weather. I was not a fan of the barn jacket craze last year, but I can get into this more modern and feminine version.

Last, but definitely not least, are my favorite Tory Burch Navy Mules. I haven’t moved these out of the wishlist and into the cart yet, but I’m damn near close. Love. Love. Love.

I love to predict trends. My first THTBP blog prediction- we’ll see another “pre” sometime in February…
